Since the Olympic Games are going on in London right now, I thought it could be an interesting idea to share a few thoughts about sports and competition in sports from a Spiritual perspective.

Many people think that competition is all bad, however, that is not always the case.

From a higher or more intuitive perspective, the evolutionary goal of humanity is for us as Souls and Spirit to take charge of our bodies and to master them so we can use them in service of Spirit – instead of being run by them.

Most people in this world are run by their bodies. That means, most of us are victimized by our thoughts, feelings, emotions, our addictions and habits, and on and on.

Now again, from the perspective of evolution, the goal of our Spirit is to actually make these bodies work for us, not the other way around. Our evolutionary goal is to disidentify from our bodies and re-identify with the Spirit who we are and who is using these bodies. So we are identified with our instrument, and that’s the problem.

So, as part of our evolution, we have to re-identfy with the spirit and un-identify with our instruments, with our bodies. We have to put our bodies back into their proper place. And the proper place for our physical body is to use it as an instrument of the Soul … which brings us to sports.

The body can’t move by itself. The mind acts upon the body via the nervous system. So when we exercise our body, we are really exercising our minds. When we are training our bodies, we are training our minds. And when we are training our bodies, we are enforcing our will over our bodies, which is a good thing. Because we are taking charge of our bodies. We make our body do what we as Soul want it to do.

It is no coincidence that we have Olympic Games, championships and all these things, why sports has become such an important aspect in our lives, and why people all over the world are getting fitter and fitter; why people all over the world are starting to exercise their bodies; why there are fitness clubs in every village today.

Did you ever ask yourself why that is?

We are all doing it because it is part of our evolution to take command of our bodies and the Spirit within us kind of inspires us, all of humanity, to do so. Whenever you see a major trend in humanity that moves humanity forward, you can be sure that it is inspired from a higher source. And so, when we exercise our body, this is one way of doing it. This is one way of taking command.

At the Olympic Games, the athletes always try to come up with a new world record. They are competing. And competition in that context is actually not a bad thing because the spirit of competition spurs them on, pushes them to the edge. So every day, every month, every year, every Olmympic Games, they are trying to get better, they are becoming more disciplined, more focused, more determined, they are using their body as a learning device. And that’s a good thing. Because at the end of the day, the physical body is a learning device of the mind.
