Today I would like to share a few thoughts about one of the greatest misunderstandings in our collective thinking: the idea that we have a shadow and that we have to integrate it and marry it or something.
In his book, Soul psychology, Dr Joshua David Stone came up with a name for this widespread philosophy. He called it the false holistic theory.
So what is this false holistic theory all about?
It is the idea that being holistic – the word holistic means “whole” – so it’s the idea that being holistic, being whole means that we have to integrate and balance the light and dark side within ourselves. It is the idea that there is darkness inside of us – some kind of shadow – AND (!) that we have to integrate it in order to be whole and complete; and that without integrating it – without integrating darkness – we are incomplete or something; that there is something missing inside of us or that it would mean that we are disowning a part of ourselves.
You see, here is the thing: Yes, we are supposed to integrate and balance the feminine and the masculine parts ourselves, the heavenly and earthly, right brain and left brain, yin and yang, all the chakras, our four bodies, and all the rest. Yes, totally!
However, there is one thing you do not want to balance and integrate: darkness.
And here is why.
What is darkness?
Darkness is just another word for negative ego. What is negative ego? The word negative comes from the Latin and means to negate. Ego in intuitive philosophy, when capped, is actually just another word for Soul.
Translation: Negative ego is denial of our Soul and Divinity. Negative ego, or darkness, is just another word for the denial of love and oneness, for the denial of our Divine Source. Darkness is the denial of our divine light.
The so-called dark side is the denial of the light.
When you deny the light – when you turn off the light – you live in darkness; darkness in the sense of ignorance.
You see, you can either embrace light or deny light. You can either embrace love or deny love. But you cannot do both. You cannot be happy and depressed at the same time. You are either one or the other. The false holistic theory is the belief that you are supposed to do or be both.
Separation is the denial of oneness. Fear is the denial of love. Darkness is the denial of light. You cannot live in separation and oneness at the same time because separation is the denial of oneness. You cannot live in love and fear at the same time because fear is the denial of love. You cannot live in light and darkness at the same time because darkness is the denial of light.
We all together, we live in denial of our own light and that’s why we live in darkness.
The world around us is definitely waking up but the world is still a pretty dark place. We attack each other. We hurt each other. We control each other. We betray each other. We are jealous of each other. And why? Because we think that’s normal. And why do we think it is normal because we all, whether we realize it or not, we practice the false holistic theory. We think that being human means to be everything: happy and unhappy, optimistic and pessimistic, friendly and unfriendly, giving and greedy, happy for others and jealous.
